Montverde Academy faces Providence in one semifinal while Whitney Young takes on Paul VI in the other.

Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) averted an upset in the quarterfinals of the City of Palms Tournament, but needed overtime to get past Lincoln (Brooklyn, N.Y.) 74-70 Friday.

Ben Simmons had 20 points and 12 rebounds to keep Montverde Academy, ranked No. 1 in the nation by the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 rankings, to stay unbeaten on the season at 8-0. The Eagles needed a basket by Jalyn Patterson with 8.7 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

Montverde Academy will meet Providence (Jacksonville, Fla.) today in a semifinal game at 7:15 p.m. at Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers.

Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.) also advanced to the semifinals with a 62-46 win over Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.). Joshua Reaves dropped 22 and Marcus Derrickson had 17 in the win. Jerron Love topped Wheeler with 16.



Paul VI will take on Whitney Young (Chicago) in the final game of the day at 9 p.m.

Whitney Young topped St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron, Ohio), LeBron James' alma mater, 52-45 to reach the semifinals. Jahlil Okafor got into foul trouble in the first half, allowing St. Mary-St. Vincent to grab the early lead. Whitney Young was able to go on a 23-13 rally in the second quarter, however, to gain a 27-26 halftime lead and take control of the game.

In other games, Yates (Houston, Texas) defeated Milton (Ga.) 90-88 in a thriller with Milton Jackson scoring 24 points and Melvin Swift tossing in 21 for the winners. Shawn O'Connell led five Milton players in double figures with 22 points.

St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) held off Greenforest (Decatur, Ga.) 63-55 behind Vance Jackson's 22 points and Daniel Hamilton's 17 points and 12 rebounds. John Ogwuche led Greenforest with 18.

Oak Ridge (Orlando, Fla.) topped Norland (Miami, Fla.) in an all-Florida battle 61-54. Antonio Blakeney led the way for Oak Ridge with 24 points while Zachary Johnson paced Norland with 21.

Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Aire, Kan.) had little trouble with Barkey Abbey of English, winning 53-24. Lourawls Nairn Jr. of Sunrise led all scorers with 16 points.



Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.) won in a runaway over Oldsmar Christian (Oldsmar, Fla.) 73-43. Jared Terrell posted 20 points and teammate Isaac Copeland added 19.
