Basketball Recap: Palmetto Comes Up Short

On Tuesday, the Palmetto Mustangs were within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 62-56 to the Christ Church Episcopal Cavaliers. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 128th, while the Cavaliers are ranked 27th).

Christ Church Episcopal's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Anthony Atkins, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 14 points and seven steals. Those seven steals gave Atkins a new career-high. Another player making a difference was David Dixon, who went 5 for 9 en route to 14 points.

Palmetto's loss dropped their record down to 6-5. As for Christ Church Episcopal, their win was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 11-3.

When Palmetto and Christ Church Episcopal next hit the court, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. Palmetto will try to stop Southside Christian's three-game winning streak when the meet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Christ Church Episcopal will square off against Powdersville and their three-game winning streak at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
