Basketball Recap: Northland Christian Cougars vs. Second Baptist Eagles

After flying high against Providence Classical last Tuesday, Northland Christian came back down to earth. The Northland Christian Cougars took a 71-59 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Second Baptist Eagles on Friday. The Cougars haven't had much luck with the Eagles recently, as the team's come up short the last two times they've met.

Defeat or not, Northland Christian got some senior leadership from Kameron McKnight and Andon Newton. McKnight went 9 for 17 on his way to 23 points and three blocks, while Newton went 5 of 12 on his way to 13 points and seven rebounds. McKnight's morning made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sion Cleveland, who posted eight points and five assists.

Even though they lost, Northland Christian smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in three consecutive matches.

Second Baptist's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Reese Alston, who went 5 of 8 on his way to 15 points in addition to eight rebounds and six assists. Alston has been hot for a while, having posted 15 or more points the last 11 times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Will Goolsby, who went 6 of 10 on his way to 15 points and five boards.

Northland Christian's record is now 14-3. As for Second Baptist, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 16-2.
