Wyalusing Valley and Athens are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Rams will square off against the Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Wyalusing Valley has given up an average of 9.8 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Wyalusing Valley managed to slip by South Williamsport the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Rams lost 17-7 to the Mountaineers on Wednesday. The Rams' defeat continues a trend for the squad, making it three in a row.
Kenny Mapes made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Micheal Phillips also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen bases of the season.
Meanwhile, Athens got the win against Sayre on Friday by a conclusive 14-2. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by six runs or more this season.
Brady Flynn made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 12 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Troy Rosenbloom, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and one double. Those four runs gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kamdyn Wheeler, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run.
Athens always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .538. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sayre only posted an OBP of .250.
Wyalusing Valley's loss dropped their record down to 3-12. As for Athens, their record is now 10-2.
Wyalusing Valley suffered a grim 19-4 defeat to Athens in their previous matchup back in March. Can the Rams avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
