Football Recap: Benedictine Extends Winning Streak to Seven

Benedictine extended their winning streak to seven on Thursday, bumping them up to 7-2. They blew past the New Hampstead Phoenix 49-13. The result was nothing new for the Cadets, who have now won six matchups by 24 points or more so far this season.

Benedictine's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Stephen Cannon, who threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes, and also rushed for 69 yards and one TD on only seven carries. That's the most passing yards Cannon has posted since back in September of 2024. Stanley Smart Jr. was another key rusher, gaining 132 total yards and two touchdowns.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Benedictine was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 258 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 154 rushing yards in seven consecutive games.

Benedictine's defense stepped up as well, laying out Eric Hockman three times. Jamir Lee was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two sacks himself.

As for New Hampstead, they dropped their record down to 2-8 with the loss, which was their fifth straight at home. Having soared to a lofty 34 points in the game before, they couldn't push the score so high this time.

When it comes to explaining why New Hampstead lost, don't look at Ari Theriot. Despite the final result, he picked up 94 receiving yards and one score. Theriot was no stranger to the big play, lighting up the secondary with a catch that went for 62 yards.

Benedictine will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on East Forsyth at 7:00 p.m. on the 14th. New Hampstead does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
