Basketball Recap: Maverick Smith's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Nicholas County over Hoover

Nicholas County was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They lost to the Hoover Huskies on the road by a 64-47 margin. If the Grizzlies were looking for revenge after losing 61-48 to them when the teams met, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Several Grizzlies players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Maverick Smith, who posted 11 points and seven rebounds. Smith is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for three straight games. Ira Mylott was another key player, dropping a double-double on 12 points and 11 boards.

Hoover's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Donovan Brown led the charge by putting up 20 points. Brown continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Dane Hatfield, who earned 20 points.

Nicholas County's loss dropped their record down to 3-6. As for Hoover, they pushed their record up to 8-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season.

Nicholas County has already played their next contest, an 81-71 win against Summers County on the 25th. As for Hoover, they will face off against Ripley at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Ripley will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something Hoover surely won't give up without a fight.
