Baseball Game Preview: Schaeffer Academy Lions vs. Mabel-Canton Cougars

The Schaeffer Academy Lions will head out to face off against the Mabel-Canton Cougars at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have had a bumpy ride up to this point with nine consecutive losses dating back to last season for Schaeffer Academy and four for Mabel-Canton.

Schaeffer Academy is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They fell just short of Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons by a score of 8-6 on Tuesday.

Grady Boldt was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off two hits. Boldt was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs. Those runs were his first of the season.

In other batting news, Payton Gora and Micah Ekbom did some serious damage despite the final result: Gora got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Ekbom went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. That run marked the first that Gora has scored this season.

Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Mabel-Canton took on Goodhue on Friday. The Cougars took a 3-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wildcats.

Mabel-Canton saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Isaac Underbakke, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base. Underbakke is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.

Schaeffer Academy's record now sits at 0-5. As for Mabel-Canton, their record is now 2-6.

Schaeffer Academy suffered a grim 12-0 defeat to Mabel-Canton in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Lions avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
