Basketball Recap: Newcomb takes loss despite strong efforts from Mikal Ashley and Roydell Edison

Basketball Recap: Newcomb Skyhawks vs. Navajo Prep Eagles

After soaring to 64 points the game before, the Newcomb Skyhawks were a bit more limited in their match on Thursday. They were outmatched by Navajo Prep on the road and fell 81-21. Newcomb has struggled against the Eagles recently, as their game on Thursday was their eighth consecutive lost matchup.

Newcomb's loss came despite strong showings from Roydell Edison and Mikal Ashley. Edison scored five points, while Ashley scored four points.

Leading Navajo Prep to victory were Orion King and Xavier Nez. King scored 16 points along with eight rebounds, while Nez scored 16 points along with five steals. Nez has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last seven times he's played. Jude Thomas was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with five assists and three steals.

Newcomb's defeat dropped their record down to 12-7. As for Navajo Prep, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-4.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newcomb will challenge the Hawks at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Thoreau knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past three matchups -- so hopefully the Skyhawks like a good challenge. As for Navajo Prep, they will head out on the road to take on the Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Tohatchi is on a five-game streak of home wins, the Eagles a four-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court.
