Baseball Recap: Mt. Vernon Gets the Win

Mt. Vernon won the last time they faced Lakewood and things went their way on Wednesday too. The Yellowjackets narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Lancers 3-1. That's two games straight that the Yellowjackets have won by exactly two runs.

Zach Beck spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits and racked up six Ks.

On the hitting side, Mt. Vernon saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jax McPeek, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Dammon Wolfe was another, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.

Mt. Vernon hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They are 5-2 when they post two or more strikeouts.

Mt. Vernon has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-11 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Lakewood, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-12.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mt. Vernon will welcome Licking Heights at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The Hornets have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.06 runs per game on average), something the Yellowjackets will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Lakewood, they will host Utica at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
