Softball Recap: Magruder Triumphs

Magruder took a 15-run defeat the last time they faced off against Poolesville, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Colonels won by a run and slipped past the Falcons 8-7. While the Colonels didn't have the best season last year (they finished 1-6), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Karina Sharma made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one run and one double.

In other batting news, Magruder let Dori Herz and Addie Belcher run wild. Herz went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double, while Belcher went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Belcher is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least one every time she's taken the field this season. Ava Mushahwar was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run.

Magruder's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-2. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.7 runs over those games. As for Poolesville, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-3.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Magruder will welcome Northwood at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Poolesville, they will host Churchill at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday.
