League recap: Chopticon's Newsome delivers best pitching performance from past week

Southern Maryland league recap: 4/3/13

Southern Maryland's top pitcher this week was Chopticon's Ljay Newsome. He won one game and retired 28 batters.

Top honors in the league this week go to Huntingtown, which finished with four wins overall, good for best in the league. The Hurricanes beat Digital Harbor 5-1 and Southern 5-0.

Lackey's pitching staff had a strong showing this week, allowing only five hits and one walk, both of which led the league.

The league boasted three .400 hitters over the past week. The group was paced by Alex Murphy, who collected five hits in nine at bats for a .556 average.

The week's strikeout crown belonged to Newsome, who turned in 28 Ks for the Braves. With 39 strikeouts this year so far, he ranks first in the league.



North Point's Newsome struck out 17 Chopticon hitters en route to a 6-2 victory on April 2. Over his six innings pitched he allowed six runs on eight hits.

Gabe Castro threw a shutout as he led Patuxent to victory over McDonough, 5-0, on Thursday. He struck out six, allowing five hits.
