Kansas: Great Bend upends Wichita Collegiate's win streak

Logan Marshall and Jordan Basye each made critical plays down the stretch in Panthers' 58-53 high school championship win.
After missing a pair of free throws with 59 seconds remaining in the championship game of Saturday’s 42nd annual Bluestem Classic basketball tournament, Great Bend’s Jordan Basye received one final opportunity to redeem himself.
Basye then stepped to the charity stripe and calmly drilled a pair of free throws with 3-seconds left, securing a 58-53 win and wrecking Wichita Collegiate’s 37-game winning streak.
"I was down on myself a little bit for missing them, but I got my confidence back up," Basye told the Great Bend Tribune in reference to his earlier miscues at the charity stripe. "We just needed to get the ball in and get fouled and go down and hit some free throws."
Basye and Great Bend looked to be in control early in the second half when the 5-foot-8 senior opened the third quarter with a pull-up jumper to extend the sixth-seeded Panthers’ 13-point halftime advantage to 35-20. But the Class 3A top-ranked Spartans rallied by outscoring Great Bend 19-5 over the rest of the third quarter to get back to within 40-39 going into the final eight minutes.
With 5 minutes, 50 seconds remaining in the final quarter, Wichita Collegiate earned its first lead of the contest. However, Dakota Ellis scored on a reverse lay-up and buried a pair of free throws to give Great Bend the lead for good, at 53-49, with 2:08 left.
Logan Marshall, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, scored eight of his game-high 17 points in the final quarter. The 6-1 senior connected on all six of his attempts at the free-throw line in the final eight minutes, and didn’t miss a charity toss in the tournament.
"That group deserved to be tournament champions tonight," Wichita Collegiate coach Mitch Fiegel told the Wichita Eagle. "I thought against most teams we could claw our way out of that hole. But that’s a disciplined team with an athlete who can get open and handle the ball. How many Logan Marshalls are we going to see this year? That’s a heck of a player who had a heck of a performance."
With the win, Great Bend improved to 9-4 on the season and is ranked ninth in the latest Kansas Class 5A boys basketball rankings. The five-point loss isn’t enough to drop the defending Class 3A champion Spartans, now 12-1 on the season, out of the top spot.
Below is a look at the latest Kansas boys and girls basketball rankings. Team records, in parenthesis, include games through Tuesday.
