Basketball Recap: Derby's Win on Thursday Extends Winning Streak to Three

Derby waltzed into their match on Thursday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They came within four points of losing the streak, but they secured a 59-55 W against the Maize Eagles. Given the Panthers' advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked ninth, while the Eagles are ranked 53rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Derby's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jack Ulwelling led the charge by shooting 50% from the field on his way to 16 points and five steals. Those five steals gave Ulwelling a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Avant Riley, who went 7-for-15 en route to 17 points along with six rebounds and five assists.

Maize lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Brayden Myovela, who dropped a double-double with 19 points and 13 boards. He has been hot, having posted eight or more rebounds the last five times he's played. Another player making a difference was Alec Grill, who posted 14 points and five assists.

Derby's record is now 19-1. As for Maize, the defeat snapped their winning streak at seven games and leaves them with a 14-6 record.

Derby has already played their next game, a 73-43 victory against Haysville Campus on the 4th. As for Maize, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 64-62 win against Garden City on the 4th.
