Softball Game Preview: University Trojans vs. Godinez Fundamental Grizzlies

The University Trojans will face off against the Godinez Fundamental Grizzlies at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their games after big wins in their previous games.

University is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Samueli Academy a 25-0 shutout on Wednesday. While the Trojans didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Maiko Shiraiwa made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in five of her six plate appearances with four runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. She also put up a double, which was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Sophia Weinberg was incredible, scoring five runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all six of her plate appearances. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in runs. Jessica Hu was another key player, scoring a run while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances.

University was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .676. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .321 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.

Meanwhile, Godinez Fundamental had to endure a seven-game losing streak dating back to last season, but that streak is no more. Everything went their way against Century on Tuesday as Godinez Fundamental made off with a 13-3 win. The Grizzlies not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 19, 2024.

Godinez Fundamental got a big performance out of Clarissa Rubio, who scored two runs while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Priscilla Tlilayatzi, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.

Godinez Fundamental's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for University, their win bumped their record up to 4-1.
