Basketball Recap: Hartsville Comes Up Short

Hartsville was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They were a single point away from ending the streak, but they lost a 52-51 heartbreaker at the hands of the Lakewood Gators. The Red Foxes were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Gators apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in November of 2020.

When it comes to explaining why Hartsville lost, don't look at Brooke Mitchell. Despite the final result, she almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Mitchell a new career-high in assists (six). Jaz Reyes was another key player, putting up 18 points.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Lakewood to victory, but perhaps none more so than Lauryn Nesmith, who posted 17 points and three steals. Another player making a difference was Zakiya Hodge, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 11 boards.

Hartsville's loss dropped their record down to 6-10. As for Lakewood, they moved to 8-10 with that win, which also ended their three-game losing streak.

Hartsville didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 52-38 defeat against Marion on the 18th. As for Lakewood, they will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Darlington at 6:00 p.m. on January 28th.
