Basketball Recap: Bessemer City Falls Despite Big Games from Jonathan Black and Josiah Guyton

Bessemer City lost against Shelby back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Bessemer City Yellow Jackets took a 72-53 bruising from the Shelby Golden Lions.

Bessemer City's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Josiah Guyton, who went 7 for 12 en route to 19 points and five rebounds, and Jonathan Black, who went 7 of 13 on his way to 18 points. The contest was Guyton's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Tristen Gordon was another key player, putting up four points and eight assists.

Even though they lost, Bessemer City was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Bessemer City dropped their record down to 12-9 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road. As for Shelby, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-7.

Bessemer City will face off against Burns at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Burns is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 76.5 points per game this season. As for Shelby, they will take on East Gaston at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Shelby knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past 11 games -- so hopefully East Gaston likes a good challenge.
