Willcox dropped their record down to 18-9 on Friday, which also ended the team's five-game streak of wins. They lost 20-10 to the Tombstone Yellow Jackets. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Yellow Jackets this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 13-5 back in March.
Nataly Thompson was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Another player making a difference was Janelle Vandermeulen, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
As for Tombstone, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 14-13 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games.
On Tombstone's side, Kyla Gross and Bria Gross made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Gross didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Bria pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances. At the plate, Gross got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI, while Bria went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Hayden Dobbins, who went 4-for-5 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Liliana Garcia was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and one double.
Looking ahead, Willcox will take on Miami at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Tombstone does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
