League recap: Chaparral extends winning streak with victory over Horizon

Chaparral extended the longest winning streak in II Section III this week by beating Horizon, 55-20. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Firebirds.

Marcos de Niza took down South Mountain 70-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Josh Eckley threw for 255 yards and four touchdowns and ran for nine yards in the win.

Chaparral's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Brad Schencker threw for 315 and six touchdowns and Jake Roh had 174 yards receiving. On the ground Emerson Carrethers chipped in 131 yards. Tyler Whiley helped Chaparral's passing attack out by catching four balls for 74 yards.

5-foot-10 quarterback Bryce Kinsler of Cactus Shadows is the league leader in passing yards this season with 2057. He has also thrown 15 touchdowns. On the ground, Prescott's Brady Mengarelli has rushed for 1712 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Paul Elvira. The Marcos de Niza star has 50 catches for 1156 yards.

The Huskies' Charlie Quinn needs only 74 yards against Notre Dame Prep next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 149 carries Quinn has accumulated 926 yard this year.

The Padres' Eckley is within 162 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against Chavez. So far this year, Eckley has thrown for 1838 yards with 19 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Horizon takes on the Saints. As it stands, Doug Shaffer's team is in third, while Notre Dame Prep is in seventh.

Marcos de Niza led II Section III in scoring this week after putting up 70 points on the Jaguars. Eckley in the win.
