Baseball Recap: Carmel Comes Up Short

Carmel dropped their record down to 16-8 on Thursday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Hollister Haybalers, falling 6-0. The matchup marked the first time this year in which the Padres were not able to get on the board.

Carmel saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alex Hirschfield, who went 1-for-3 with one double.

As for Hollister, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.9 runs on average over those games.

On Hollister's side, Trent Roach was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run over seven innings pitched. Roach has been consistent: he hasn't given up a single earned run in six consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.

In other batting news, Hollister let Jordy Quezada and Wes Aviles run wild. Quezada went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Aviles went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Those two RBI gave Aviles a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Braydon Barone, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI.

Carmel and Hollister should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Padres will take on Salinas at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank advantage (200 vs. 534). Meanwhile, Hollister (ranked 191st) will meet Monterey (ranked 594th) at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
