Baseball Recap: Gateway Beats Mcguffey for Their Third Straight Win

Gateway put another one in the bag on Monday to keep their perfect season alive. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the McGuffey Highlanders a 15-0 shutout. Fans of the Gators have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 6+ runs.

Jon Saunders was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That one hit allowed gave him a new career-low. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.

In other batting news, Gateway let Max Cobbs and Ryan Deselich run wild. Cobbs went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one double, while Deselich scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Those two stolen bases gave Deselich a new career-high. Donovan Deluco was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.

Gateway hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in four consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Gateway pushed their record up to 3-0 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average this season. As for McGuffey, they now have a losing record of 1-2-1.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Gateway will challenge South Allegheny at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for McGuffey, they will take on California at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
