Basketball Recap: Garner Comes Up Short

Garner lost against Southeast Raleigh back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Garner Trojans had to suffer through a 70-22 loss at the hands of the Southeast Raleigh Bulldogs. While losing is never fun, the Trojans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 286th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 29th).

Garner's loss came despite strong showings from Sumayah Jones and Aniyah Williams. Jones posted eight points in addition to eight boards and three steals, while Williams put up 12 points. That was a full 36.4% of Garner's points, marking the third time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points.

Southeast Raleigh's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Trinity Dunn, who scored 16 points. Korryn Davis was another key player, putting up 16 points.

Garner's loss dropped their record down to 8-7. As for Southeast Raleigh, their win was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 14-1.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Garner will head out to square off against South Garner at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. South Garner will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Garner surely won't give up without a fight. As for Southeast Raleigh, they are taking a road trip to take on Cleveland at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Southeast Raleigh knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past seven matches -- so hopefully Cleveland likes a good challenge.
