Vasko, King lead Tigers to top spot after winning Class 6 state title.

The high school football season in Virginia came to a close last weekend. Oscar Smith was among the victors, beating Madison 42-17 in the Class 6 title game at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. That 25-point triumph helped propel the Tigers to the No. 1 ranking in the final MaxPreps Virginia Top 25.

Oscar Smith was led all year by signal caller Ethan Vasko and running back Kevon King, especially in the playoffs where both athletes took turns leading the way. Vasko, for example, accounted for a Virginia High School League record 10 touchdowns in a 77-7 opening round win over Cosby after tossing nine scoring strikes and running for one score.

The Tigers then turned to the running game in the championship clinching win over Madison, and King led the way running for 290 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.

The Tigers scored 671 points on the year, an average of 47.9 points per contest, scoring 48 points or more in 10 wins. Oscar Smith's defense, meanwhile gave up just 112 points for the season, or an average of eight points an outing. The Tigers limited 11 foes to 10 points or less and posted six shutouts while winning their second straight state championship.

Back to back Class 5 state champion Stone Bridge climbed into the No. 2 spot at season's end while Varina sits No. 3 after claiming the Class 4 state title. Led by MaxPreps Virginia Football Player of the Year Zach Rice, Liberty Christian rested in the No. 6 slot following a Class 3 state runner-up finish. Riverheads won its sixth straight Class 1 state football title and finishes 2021 in the No. 11 spot.
