The La Vega Pirates will square off against the Robinson Rockets at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
On Friday, La Vega made easy work of China Spring and carried off a 38-17 win. The result was nothing new for the Pirates, who have now won four games by 21 points or more so far this season.
Tristen Tyler went supernova, rushing for 62 yards and three touchdowns. Another player making a difference was Kourtney Parr, who threw for 229 yards and a pair of TDs.
Meanwhile, Robinson came tearing into Friday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 22 points), and they left with even more momentum. They enjoyed a cozy 41-27 victory over the Cadets. Given the Rockets' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 174th, while the Cadets are ranked 361st) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Robinson's win came from a few key players La Vega will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Evan Moreno, who rushed for 285 yards and two scores while picking up 7.9 yards per carry. That's the most rushing yards he has posted since back in September of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Brice McCurdy, who rushed for 67 yards and one touchdown on only eight carries.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Robinson was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 352 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 152 rushing yards in ten consecutive matchups dating back to last season.
Robinson's defense made their presence known, laying out Caden Coffman eight times. Derrick Medlock was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up three sacks himself. He also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with seven.
Robinson's win bumped their record up to 6-1. As for La Vega, their victory bumped their record up to 5-2.
We should be in store for an exciting game as the two teams have no problem gaining yardage. La Vega has been on an offensive roll this season, having averaged 360.9 total yards per game. However, it's not like Robinson struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 461.6 total yards. With a pair of commanding offenses duking it out, the defenses are going to have their work cut out for them.
La Vega beat Robinson 35-22 when the teams last played back in October of 2024. Do the Pirates have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Rockets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
