Bergen Reilly of
O'Gorman (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was picked as a replacement player for Team USA volleyball's Olympic-level team this weekend after a player's COVID-19 positive test left a vacancy on the roster. The U.S. is set to compete in the Pan Am Final Six tournament starting Sunday in the Dominican Republic.
She's believed to be the first high school player to join the Olympic-leve team since Cynthia Barboza,
who was one of the top 20 athletes in the MaxPreps era.
Reilly's father, Brendan, told the Sioux Falls Argus Leader "it all "happened so fast." The family said they got the call Thursday and were "inundated with forms because, for Team USA, having a 17-year-old on the roster is 'new to them.'"
Reilly, a multi-year MaxPreps All-American, has competed on two previous USA Volleyball squads, winning gold this summer with the U19 team at the Pan Am Games and earning silver last fall with the U18 group at the World Championships. At this summer's Pan Am Games, Reilly took home Best Setter and Tournament MVP honors.
For her prep career, Reilly has 1,577 assists, 913 digs, 876 kills and 202 aces. O'Gorman is off to a 3-0 start this season.
