Basketball Recap: Gateway Gets the Win

Gateway won the last time they faced Dunbar and things went their way on Thursday too. The Gateway Eagles pulled ahead with a 53-52 photo finish over the Dunbar Tigers. The victory almost wasn't to be: the Eagles were down 36-22 in the second quarter.

Gateway got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Andrew Leopold out in front who posted 14 points in addition to eight boards and three steals. Leopold is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Christopher Davis, who had 16 points.

Despite the loss, Dunbar still got an impressive performance from Brayant Corona, who went 7 of 16 on his way to 17 points in addition to five rebounds and five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jamari Cobb, who put up nine points.

Gateway pushed their record up to 4-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.8 points per game. As for Dunbar, they moved to 6-4 with that loss, which also ended their four-game winning streak.

Gateway didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 69-46 win against Riverdale on the 13th. As for Dunbar, a feisty cat fight will be fought when the Dunbar Tigers take on the East Lee County Jaguars at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. East Lee County has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
