Softball Recap: Monterey Picks Up Eighth Straight Win at Home

Monterey entered their tilt with Smith County on Wednesday with four consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with five. They came out on top against the Owls by a score of 8-4. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 11-0 on April 8th.

Alexandrea Novak was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI.

In other batting news, Haylee Trevathan and Kaylin Shepherd did most of the damage at the plate: Trevathan went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Shepherd went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Those three hits gave Shepherd a new career-high. Haylee Garthwait was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Monterey pushed their record up to 16-9-1 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Smith County, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-7-1.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Monterey will head out to challenge Van Buren County at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Smith County, they will venture away from home to square off against Cannon County at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
