Kansas: Woods, Spartan 'D' upend Hillsboro

By Dean Backes Feb 25, 2010, 12:00am

Now that the Wichita Collegiate boys and girls swept the Mid-Central League's final regular-season high school basketball titles, the Spartans go for the sweep of the Class 3A state tournament.

Ashia Woods and the Collegiate (Wichita) defense secured a boys and girls conference sweep of the Mid-Central Leagues' final regular-season conference championship with a 47-27 win over the Hillsboro girls Tuesday.

Woods did her part by contributing 32 points and six steals in the win, while the Spartan defense forced 35 Trojan turnovers.

"When you hold a quality opponent to two points in a quarter and turn around to hold them to nine in the second quarter, that’s about as good as you can get," Spartan coach Terrence Phox told the Wichita Eagle of knocking off the 14-6 Trojans. "The bottom line is, yeah that was a pretty solid defensive half."

Woods tallied 12 first-half points and the ‘D’ forced 16 turnovers during the same time span as Phox’s club jumped out to a 21-11 advantage. Wichita Collegiate took a 34-21 advantage into the fourth quarter. With the win, the top-ranked Spartans improved to 11-0 in the conference and 19-1 overall. Wichita Collegiate’s lone loss this season was to Class 5A’s top-ranked Andover Central, 65-41, in early December.

The top-ranked Collegiate (Wichita) boys, who fell to Class 5A 10th-ranked Great Bend 58-53 in January, are 11-0 in league play and 20-1 on the season. Wichita Collegiate has a legitimate shot at sweeping the boys and girls Class 3A state championships.

The Spartans nearly pulled off the double championships a year ago when the girls fell to Southwestern Heights 65-59 in the title game, while the boys edged Sabetha in their championship tilt.
