Baseball Game Preview: New Ulm Eagles vs. Worthington Trojans

New Ulm is 9-1 against Worthington since May of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Eagles will host the Trojans at 5:30 p.m. New Ulm's pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so Worthington's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

New Ulm is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They blew past Belle Plaine 17-1 on Tuesday. The Eagles have beaten the Tigers the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Tigers has come to flipping the script.

New Ulm got a great performance from Kolton Achman as he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Achman has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Zach Hubbard, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Dirk Haynes was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Meanwhile, Thursday just wasn't the day for Worthington's offense. They came up short against St. Peter on Thursday, falling 11-0. The Trojans have struggled against the Saints recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost meeting.

New Ulm pushed their record up to 8-3 with the victory, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Worthington, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-8.

Everything went New Ulm's way against Worthington in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as New Ulm made off with a 10-0 victory. Do the Eagles have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Trojans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
