Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Sonja Lawson and Amayah Leyva Lead Buckeye to Victory

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Estrella Foothills, Buckeye was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They snuck past the Dysart Demons with a 51-46 victory. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Hawks also won the last time the pair played back in December of 2022.

Buckeye was led to victory by Amayah Leyva and Sonja Lawson. Leyva posted 15 points, while Lawson went 6 of 9 on her way to 13 points. Those 13 points gave Lawson a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Carsyn Jones, who had seven points.

Buckeye smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in five consecutive matchups.

The win got Buckeye back to even at 6-6. As for Dysart, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-9.

Buckeye didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 69-39 victory against Crismon on the 3rd. As for Dysart, they will challenge Tempe at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Dysart is facing Tempe at the right time seeing as Tempe is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
