Desert Mountain has gone 8-2 against Horizon recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Wolves will be playing in front of their home fans against the Huskies at 3:45 p.m. Desert Mountain will be looking to extend their current 21-game winning streak.
In Thursday's Canine Competition, Desert Mountain prevailed. Everything went their way against Campo Verde on Thursday as they made off with a 12-2 victory. The Wolves might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 13 contests by six runs or more this season.
Lilly 'Goose' Goodwin made a big impact no matter where she played. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 19 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That stolen base was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Desert Mountain let Avery Gehrke and McKinsey Beyer run wild. Gehrke went 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base, while Beyer went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. That's the most runs Beyer has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Hagan Nugent, who earned two runs and one stolen base.
Desert Mountain hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Campo Verde struck out 14 times.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Horizon, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over Chaparral on Thursday.
Pierson Hozza spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up nine Ks.
On the hitting side, Addison Willfong and Lexi Nolen did most of the damage at the plate: Willfong went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Nolen got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Shay Valenti, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one double.
Desert Mountain's victory was their 17th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 24-1-1. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.1 runs over those games. As for Horizon, the victory got them back to even at 10-10.
Desert Mountain's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's game. The Wolves have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.3 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Horizon, though, as they've been averaging only 1.3 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Desert Mountain continue to outrun the ball?
Desert Mountain skirted past Horizon 2-0 in their previous meeting back in March. Do the Wolves have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Huskies turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
