Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times was among those reporting Thursday that sophomore quarterback Cole Leinart, son of Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart, has transferred from Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) to Newport Harbor (Newport Beach, Calif.), according to media reports Thursday.

The 6-foot-4 signal caller has been behind four-year starter Elijah Brown and appeared in two games this season for No. 1-ranked Mater Dei, connecting on 2 of 3 pass attempts for 10 yards and one touchdown according to statistics submitted to MaxPreps.

CIF transfer rules call for a legitimate move in order to be eligible immediately. Otherwise, Leinart would be sidelined for a sit-out period.

Newport Harbor (2-3) is led by sophomore quarterback Jaden O'Neal, who has thrown for 1,034 yards on 85 of 148 passing and 10 touchdowns.

The elder Leinart played at Mater Dei before going on to win college's top award in 2004 and leading the Trojans to the national title in 2005. He played six seasons in the NFL.
