Baseball Recap: Milford Central Takes a Loss

Milford Central's last matchup with Cherry Valley-Springfield could've gone either way, but unfortunately the same can't be said for the pair's matchup on Friday. The Wildcats lost 13-6 to the Patriots. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Patriots this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 5-3 back in April.

Aidan Mertz was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off one hit. What's more, he gave up only one walk, the fewest he's had since back in May of 2024. He was also big at the plate, earning two runs and two stolen bases. He is becoming a predictor of Milford Central's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 2-4 when he doesn't).

Mertz wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Evan Clark, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Clark has become a key player for Milford Central: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-4 otherwise. Clark Smith was another, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Milford Central has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-5 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Cherry Valley-Springfield, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-1.
