Football Recap: Highland Springs' Victory on Friday Extends Winning Streak to Five

Highland Springs extended their winning streak to five on Friday, bumping them up to 6-2. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Hermitage Panthers 31-28. Given the Springers' advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia football rankings (they are ranked fifth, while the Panthers are ranked 28th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

As for Hermitage, the loss snapped their winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 6-2 record. The defensive woes were uncharacteristic for they, who until this game were averaging 14.5 points allowed.

When it comes to explaining why Hermitage lost, don't look at Avery Curtis. Despite the final result, he rushed for 214 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 9.3 yards per carry, and also picked up 66 receiving yards and one score. Curtis really tore up the turf during one magnificent 96-yard run. Another player making a difference was Ben Yeanay, who threw for 230 yards and one touchdown.

Looking ahead, Highland Springs will take on Varina at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Blue Devils' defense has only allowed 8.5 points per game this season, so the Springers' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Hermitage, they will challenge Freeman at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Panthers 14.5, the Mavericks 13.2) so any points scored will be well earned.
