Basketball Recap: Akiak Takes a Loss

After flying high against Ayaprun last Saturday, Akiak came back down to earth. The Akiak Thunderbolts took a 50-42 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Kalskag Grizzly Bears on Thursday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Thunderbolts came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Alaska basketball rankings (they are ranked 21st, while the Grizzly Bears are ranked 100th).

Kalskag can attribute much of their success to Emily Evan, who posted 17 points. The dominant performance gave Evan a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Maria Kameroff, who put up ten points.

Akiak's loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 6-1 and their overall record down to 8-2. As for Kalskag, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-3.

Looking ahead, Akiak won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Non Varsity Opponent at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. As for Kalskag, they will challenge Tuluksak on Saturday.
