Softball Recap: Mendota Comes Up Short

Mendota had lost eight straight on the road, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 2-15 to make it nine. They came up short against the Mercer County Golden Eagles, falling 14-1. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Trojans of the 13-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in March of 2019.

Karson Doyle made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run.

As for Mercer County, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight games. That somehow still isn't as good as their 20-6 record this season. Considering they have won 12 matchups by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

On Mercer County's side, Elsie Cook made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Cook has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 17 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Jayden Weeks was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Kelsie Weeks, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Mendota has already played their next contest (against Erie), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Mercer County, they have also already played their next game, a 4-0 loss against Brimfield on the 12th.
