Basketball Game Preview: Vestaburg Wolverines vs. St. Charles Bulldogs

Vestaburg is 0-8 against St. Charles since February of 2021 but things could change on Thursday. The Vestaburg Wolverines will square off against the St. Charles Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m.

Vestaburg is headed into Thursday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Tuesday. They took a 45-34 hit to the loss column at the hands of Breckenridge. While losing is never fun, the Wolverines can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 498th, while the Huskies are ranked 197th).

Vestaburg's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Lily Johnston, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine boards, and Jaiden Anderson, who posted ten points and five rebounds. Those ten points gave Anderson a new career-high. Jessica Stouten was another key player, putting up seven points and eight rebounds.

Meanwhile, St. Charles put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. They secured a 50-44 W over Fulton.

St. Charles' win came from a few key players Vestaburg will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Nicole Zelinko, who went 5 of 7 on her way to 12 points and five steals. Zelinko is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least three every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Allison Zelinko, who went 6 of 8 on her way to 13 points along with five boards and three steals.

St. Charles pushed their record up to 5-0 with the win, which was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.2 points per game. As for Vestaburg, their loss dropped their record down to 1-5.

Vestaburg was taken down by St. Charles 63-27 when the teams last played back in January of 2024. Can Vestaburg avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
