Basketball Recap: Northmont Comes Up Short

Northmont played a tough match on Saturday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were beaten by the Fairmont Firebirds 78-20. While losing is never fun, the Thunderbolts can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 500th, while the Firebirds are ranked 18th).

Fairmont was led to victory by Janiyah Hargrave and Kaylah Thornton. Hargrave dropped a double-double on 35 points and 12 rebounds, while Thornton went 11 for 15 on her way to 23 points in addition to eight steals and five boards. Thornton is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 14 games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Nico Cornett, who posted five points and seven steals.

Northmont's loss was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-16. As for Fairmont, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 16-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Northmont will venture away from home to face off against Arcanum at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Arcanum has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games. Fairmont has already played their next game (against Talawanda), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
