Basketball Recap: Newman AA Wins Going Away Against Varsity Opponent

Newman AA lost to Varsity Opponent back in March, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Sunday. The Cardinals strolled past Varsity Opponent with points to spare, taking the game 72-58. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cardinals.

Brenden Mathey had an outrageously good game as he dropped a double-double with 29 points and 14 rebounds. That's the most boards he has posted since back in January. The team also got some help courtesy of Chris Taylor, who dropped a double-double with ten points and 14 rebounds.

Newman AA smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 12 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Newman AA's record now sits at 2-0.

Coming up, Varsity Opponent will challenge Newman AAA at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Newman AA will be paying especially close attention to Varsity Opponent's game: after Varsity Opponent face off against Cumberland Academy of Georgia, they'll take on Newman AA again at 4:00 p.m. on December 3.
