Basketball Recap: Radford Comes Up Short

It was a proper cat-fight when Radford took on Alleghany on Monday. The Radford Bobcats took a 45-41 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Alleghany Cougars. The defeat continues a trend for the Bobcats in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now lost seven in a row.

Despite the loss, Radford saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Kearson Carter went 8-for-18 to rack up 20 points in addition to five boards and three steals. That was a full 48.8% of Radford's points, marking the eighth time in a row Carter has posted more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Angel Thompson, who had ten points.

Alleghany's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kelsey Nicely led the charge by dropping a double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Nicely is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down ten or more in each of the last eight games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryce Leitch, who went 5-for-8 on her way to 10 points along with eight rebounds and three steals.

Radford's defeat dropped their record down to 9-11. As for Alleghany, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 13 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-6 record this season.

Radford will face off against Carroll County at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Alleghany, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 41-27 win against Floyd County on the 18th.
