Basketball Recap: Sickles Piles Up the Points Against Chamberlain

A well-balanced attack led Sickles over Chamberlain in every quarter on their way to victory on Wednesday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Sickles Gryphons blew the Chamberlain Storm out of the water with a 68-22 final score. The Gryphons have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine contests by 20 points or more this season.

Sickles' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kelsey Sharpe, who went 9 for 11 on her way to 23 points along with eight assists and eight steals. Sharpe is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 34 games she's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Jadyn Watts, who went 8 of 16 en route to 19 points in addition to eight boards and five steals.

Sharpe wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Sickles was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive matchups.

Despite the loss, Chamberlain saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Ellayna Stephens posted 12 points. That was a full 54.5% of Chamberlain's points, marking the eighth time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kenya Hilliard, who earned eight points.

Sickles has been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten games, which provided a nice bump to their 15-7 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.9 points per game. As for Chamberlain, with the defeat, they broke their 15-game winning streak and moved their record to 16-4.

Sickles and Chamberlain should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings. Sickles (ranked 138th) will meet Hillsborough (ranked 429th) at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Similarly, Chamberlain will face off against Riverview at 6:30 p.m. on Friday up 277 places (200 vs. 477).
