Softball Game Preview: Salpointe Catholic Lancers vs. Sahuarita Mustangs

The Salpointe Catholic Lancers will square off against the Sahuarita Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Salpointe Catholic was handed a heart-breaking two-run defeat in their last game, but they sure didn't let that happen against Sahuaro on Wednesday. The Lancers were the clear victors by a 19-1 margin over the Cougars. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Lancers considering their one-run performance the matchup before.

Audri Elias looked comfortable as she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.

On the hitting side, Kenzi Daley was a standout: she scored three runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-2. The team also got some help courtesy of Neveah Tapia, who scored three runs and stole three bases while going 1-for-3.

Salpointe Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .649. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.

Meanwhile, Sahuarita won against Ironwood Ridge on Wednesday with 12 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Thursday. The Mustangs never let Cholla get on the board and left with a 12-0 victory. The win continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Chargers: they've now won six in a row.

Sahuarita pushed their record up to 19-3 with the victory, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games. As for Salpointe Catholic, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-4-1 record this season.

Everything went Salpointe Catholic's way against Sahuarita in their previous matchup back in May of 2023, as Salpointe Catholic made off with a 10-4 victory. Do the Lancers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
