Baseball Game Preview: McLean County Cougars vs. Apollo Eagles

McLean County hasn't had much luck against Apollo recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Cougars will be playing at home against the Eagles at 5:30 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (McLean County 4.1, Apollo 4) so any runs scored will be well earned.

The home team had come away the winner the last five times McLean County and Breckinridge County had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Cougars fell just short of the Fighting Tigers by a score of 3-2 on Monday.

Will Gatton was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in April.

On the hitting side, Jaelin Groves was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. Another player making a difference was Jayden Taylor, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Apollo, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They put the hurt on Lyon County with a sharp 12-2 victory on Saturday. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Eagles' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

Apollo is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.6 runs over those games. As for McLean County, their loss dropped their record down to 21-8.
