Basketball Preview: Topsail Pirates vs. Hoggard Vikings
Topsail is 0-10 against the Vikings since January of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Topsail Pirates will be playing in front of their home fans against the Hoggard Vikings at 7:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Topsail's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their third straight loss. They suffered a rough 76-56 loss at the hands of North Brunswick. Topsail has not had much luck with the Scorpions recently, as the team's come up short the last five times they've met.
Meanwhile, it may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Hoggard ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They escaped with a win against West Brunswick by the margin of a single free throw, 56-55. Given Hoggard's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 142nd, while the Trojans are ranked 313th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Jayzion Davis, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Another player making a difference was Malakahi West, who scored five points along with six rebounds.
Topsail has not been sharp recently as the team's lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-14 record this season. As for Hoggard, their victory bumped their record up to 12-8.
