Softball Preview: Hillsboro Spartans vs. Canby Cougars
Hillsboro is 0-4 against Canby since April of 2023 but things could change on Tuesday. The Spartans will head out on the road to square off against the Cougars at 5:00 p.m. This will be Hillsboro's first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
Hillsboro lost 8-1 to Aloha on Friday.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Canby). They blew past Clackamas 21-7 on Thursday. The Cougars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by 11 runs or more this season.
Alli Hayzlett was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 2.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Katelyn Vissers, who went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Another player making a difference was Abigail Troutman, who went 1-for-3 with five RBI, one triple, and one run.
Canby kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in May of 2024.
Hillsboro now has a losing record of 3-4. As for Canby, the win got them back to even at 5-5.
