Basketball Recap: Mary Persons Falls Despite Big Games from Kelvin Hughley and Dee Grier

Mary Persons lost against Upson-Lee back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Mary Persons Bulldogs took a 70-64 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Upson-Lee Knights. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 403rd, while the Knights are ranked 107th).

Mary Persons' loss came despite strong showings from Dee Grier and Kelvin Hughley. Grier almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine assists, while Hughley went 6 for 8 from beyond the arc en route to 22 points. The dominant performance gave Hughley a new career-high in points. Tobias Hare was another key player, putting up 11 points.

They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Mary Persons was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Mary Persons dropped their record down to 7-17 with the loss, which was their fourth straight at home. As for Upson-Lee, their victory bumped their record up to 16-5.

Mary Persons will challenge Sandy Creek at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Sandy Creek's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 17 games. As for Upson-Lee, they will square off against Twiggs County at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. That match will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Carmelo Williams and Daniel Pitts.
