Softball Recap: Boardman Takes a Loss

Boardman extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping them down to 10-7. They fell 6-3 to the Austintown-Fitch Falcons. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Falcons this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 6-0 on Monday.

Boardman saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ellie Wymer, who went 1-for-4 with one RBI.

As for Austintown-Fitch, their win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 17-0. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games.

On Austintown-Fitch's side, Mila Hamley spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three runs (all of which were unearned) on two hits and racked up eight Ks. Hamley has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Kylie Folkwein and Alyssa Rodgers did most of the damage at the plate: Folkwein went 1-for-2 with one home run and four RBI, while Rodgers went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. That's the most stolen bases Rodgers has posted over her last seven games. Another player making a difference was Abby Toth, who went 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Boardman and Austintown-Fitch should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. The Spartans (ranked 38th) will meet Harding (ranked 558th) at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Austintown-Fitch will face off against Strasburg-Franklin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank advantage (2 vs. 114). The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Falcons 2.3, the Tigers 2.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
