Football Game Preview: Willamette Wolverines vs. Mountainside Mavericks

The Willamette Wolverines will square off against the Mountainside Mavericks on Friday. Willamette is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.

On Friday, Willamette was fully in charge, breezing past South Salem 56-20. With the Wolverines ahead 56-7 at the half, the game was all but over already.

Willamette found their leader in sophomore Zeke Thomas, who threw for 262 yards and four TDs on perfect 10-for-10 passing, and also rushed for 56 yards and one touchdown. Thomas' superb passer rating of 177.1 also marked a new season-high. Hunter Vaughn also deserves a mention for his punt return touchdown.

Willamette didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited South Salem to a completion percentage of just 36.5%. The Wolverines weren't nearly as limited: they posted one of 81.2%.

Special teams played a big role in the game for Willamette, adding 14 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Vaughn, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Mountainside never let their opponents score on Friday. They blew past Beaverton, posting a 48-0 win. The victory continues a trend for the Mavericks in their matchups with the Beavers: they've now won five in a row.

Willamette's record is now 9-0. As for Mountainside, their record now sits at 5-3.
