Football Game Preview: Willamette Wolverines vs. Mountainside Mavericks

The Willamette Wolverines will challenge the Mountainside Mavericks on Friday. Willamette will come into the contest with an undefeated record on the line.

On Friday, everything came up roses for Willamette against South Salem as the squad secured a 56-20 victory. That 36 point margin sets a new team best for the Wolverines this season.

Zeke Thomas was his usual excellent self, throwing for 262 yards and four touchdowns on perfect 10-for-10 passing, while also rushing for 56 yards and one score. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in passer rating (177.1). Hunter Vaughn was another key player, picking up 134 receiving yards and three TDs.

Willamette didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited South Salem to a completion percentage of just 36.5%. The Wolverines weren't nearly as limited: they posted one of 81.2%.

Special teams also deserves some recognition, posting 14 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Vaughn, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Mountainside got themselves on the board against Beaverton on Friday, but Beaverton never followed suit. They blew past the Beavers 48-0. The win continues a trend for the Mavericks in their matchups with the Beavers: they've now won five in a row.

Willamette's victory bumped their record up to 9-0. As for Mountainside, their win bumped their record up to 5-3.
