Chris Hermann’s school record 3,200 meter time of 9:50 was unbeatable for 28 years at Osage High School. It was supposed to be untouchable. But somebody forgot to tell Jason Barry that.

The Indian distance runner impressed his coach, and others, by shattering the mark with a time of 9:45.18 and a third place finish at the Ninth Annual Mizzou Relays last weekend.

“To break that one is impressive,” School of the Osage coach Drew Phillips told the Lake Sun Leader. “(We) thought that would never be broken. Hermann is regarded as good of a distance runner as we’ve ever had. It’s exciting for Jason to be in that company.”

Barry finished behind Potosi’s Jacob Swearingen (9:33.47), the 2007 Class 3 state cross-country champion and Jefferson City Helias’ Will Le Page (9:43.46). Columbia Hickman’s Zach Lynn (9:52.36) and De Soto’s Brett Guemmer (9:56.35) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

With last weekend’s performance, Barry now owns both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter records at Osage. The senior placed second in the mile run at the 2008 relays with a time of 4:35.04. Barry broke the school record in the 1,600-meters last year when he was clocked at 4:31.00.

Baseball: Richardson Joins 500-Win Club

With Tuesday’s 11-2 belting of Blue Eye, Forsyth coach Neale Richardson earned his 500th career win as a baseball coach.

Forsyth scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning and three more in the third to rally for an 8-2 advantage after falling behind 2-0 in the first frame. While the top of the order struggled at the plate, the Panthers’ bottom five hitters broke through with nine hits.

Jon Reyes belted a pair of hits and struck out six enemy batters and allowed seven hits in the complete game performance.

Blair Oaks Winning Streak Snapped

Southern Boone played the role of spoiler Tuesday with a 5-4 victory, handing Blair Oaks its first baseball loss in 33 games and its first loss of the 2008 season. Blair Oaks then turned around Wednesday and handed Hallsville a five-inning 17-0 thumping at the Falcon Athletic Complex.

“I’m very proud of the way they came out,” Blair Oaks coach Brian Ash told the News Tribune of the Falcon rebound. “They were focused. From when we first stepped out for (batting practice) to our in-and-out, we were pretty sharp.”

Dustin Kremer earned the win for the Falcons in their rebound match after pitching a seven-strikeout one-hitter. The sophomore used his breaking ball to take control of the game.

Moore’s No-Hitter Leads South Shelby to Win

Kyler Moore no-hit Atlanta for South Shelby in a 10-0 five-inning Cardinal triumph on Tuesday. Moore was also hot from the plate going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and two runs batted in.

Softball: Standlee No-Hits Jasper

Frontenac’s Jena Standlee proved herself to be a prophet Monday. On the bus heading to the Raiders’ 15-0 trouncing of Jasper, Standlee thought and talked about tossing a no-hitter. Then she went out and did it.

“Actually, I think she looked the best that I have seen all season,” Raider coach Cassie Buche told the Carthage Press. “She was focused and she threw very hard tonight.”

Standlee struck out 10 Eagle batters over the course of five innings and did not allow a base runner. But she did have some help. Especially in the third inning when Alyssa Snow made a diving catch in right field after an Eagle batter threatened to interrupt the no-hit performance.

“I was happy she caught that,” Standlee told the Press. “I thanked her after the game and gave her a kiss on the cheek. I was just very lucky that I had my team behind me to back me up.”

Girls Soccer: Marshall Snaps Conference Skid

Marshall’s Vicky Renderos was the recipient of a Courtney Henley pass that allowed her to deliver the game winning goal in a 1-0 North Central Missouri Conference win over defending league champion Hannibal Wednesday.

After receiving the assist from her senior teammate eight minutes into the contest, Renderos got by her defender and delivered a shot over the out stretched hands of Hannibal goalie Whitney Voepel from 20-feet away. The one-goal triumph was Marshall’s first conference win in nearly three years.

The Lady Owls snapped a 23-game skid in conference play with its fourth straight win to open the 2008 season.
