Baseball Recap: Quaboag Regional Takes a Loss

Quaboag Regional had lost 15 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 0-13 to make it 16. They came up short against the Auburn Rockets, falling 23-3. If the Cougars were looking for revenge after losing 18-3 to the Rockets when the teams met back in May of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

As for Auburn, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 14-1. The result was nothing new for the Rockets, who have now won 11 contests by seven runs or more so far this season.

For Auburn's part, Connor Gardell was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Gardell has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on James Hillis, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with seven RBI, two triples, and one run. Those two triples gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Cameron McLaughlin, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Quaboag Regional will challenge rival Oxford at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Auburn is set to take on their familiar foe Tantasqua Regional at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Rockets 2.1, the Warriors 3) so any runs scored will be well earned.
