Softball Recap: Wasilla Takes a Loss

Wasilla extended their losing streak to six on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 4-14-1 in the process. They came up short against the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears, falling 22-2. Unfortunately, that's the fifth time they've come up short against the Crimson Bears this season, with their most recent defeat being a 13-7 loss on Saturday.

Wasilla saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Maylee Metcalf, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.

As for Juneau-Douglas, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 16-13-1. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

On Juneau-Douglas' side, Brynn Wheeler looked comfortable as she tossed 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Wheeler has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two hits in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Gwen Nizich, who went 4-for-5 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Cassie Chenoweth, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wasilla will welcome Colony at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Juneau-Douglas, they will take on Sitka at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Wolves have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.8 runs per game on average), something the Crimson Bears will no doubt try to take advantage of.
